Growing up with asthma, Dr Volckens learned early on how scary it can be to fight to breathe. This experience, combined with his innate curiosity, love of nature and interest in all things mechanical, has defined his mission to create a world where the air is clean everywhere. He and his research students at Colorado State University use Mac to design and build devices that allow people to measure air quality. The measurements are captured on iPhone — through apps they’ve developed — to help people make informed decisions about the impact of the air they breathe. The greater Dr Volckens can scale his air pollution research, the greater effect he can have on global health.
MacBook Pro. All the power Dr Volckens needs to analyse massive air quality datasets and render stunning visualisations of his findings on interactive dashboards. All at the same time.
iPhone. Dr Volckens and his team develop customised iOS apps that serve as the user interface for his air sensors on iPhone. The apps collect hundreds of measurements, like temperature, humidity and air quality, from anywhere in the world in real time.

Bergsma comes from a fifth-generation farming family. He cares deeply about farmers and their success because they represent a vital part of America’s economy and culture. Bergsma chooses Apple technology to power his precision agriculture research. iPad Pro and iPhone are his primary tools for exploring how different technologies can make farming more productive, efficient and cost-effective. With apps on iPad Pro, he controls sensors on machinery and flies drones to collect water and temperature data. Bergsma shares his findings with the farming community to help the industry innovate farming techniques on a global scale.
iPad Pro. Bergsma uses apps like Climate FieldView on iPad Pro to capture, monitor and measure all of his agriculture research data — like water irrigation and crop nutrition — from seeding to harvest.
iPhone. From the greenhouse to the field, Bergsma uses iPhone wherever he goes. The convenience and flexibility allow him to check the weather, capture images and measure soil moisture on the fly.

A musician and engineer, Dr Kim’s passion and research lie at the intersection of performing arts and technology. He has chosen Apple technology to power his innovation lab, so he can foster an environment where magical ideas are discovered in unexpected places. Visualising sound with colour, bending notes on a piano and even integrating smart fabrics with robots are all supported by Mac. And Dr Kim brings the wonders of music and technology to the world by using Apple’s developer tools to build apps that support community efforts and enable access for everyone.
MacBook Pro. Mac easily handles pro music and visualisation apps — like Logic Pro and MATLAB — to push the boundaries of Dr Kim’s machine listening research using instruments and robots he builds himself.

Ajuan’s passion for making an impact was first inspired by their musician–educator parents and New York City’s 1980s counterculture. Today, as a writer and artist, Ajuan uses Apple technology to create artwork that counters negative representations of Black people with “positive, liberating images” of Black lives and experiences in their communities. Ajuan furthers their mission of expression for race, gender and identity as an educator. Using iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, Ajuan leads MFA students through a journey of self-exploration and experimentation that brings together meaningful, personal stories with digital art. With Notability and Adobe apps on iPad, Ajuan teaches students how to create compelling narratives, 2D and 3D animations, and character illustrations for powerful web comics that express diversity and build portfolios for the future.

For Dr Iimura, it was a cloud of smoke, a set of LEGO bricks and a ball of Play-Doh that set him on a lifelong path of solving problems with technology. As a young boy, he used the popular toys to create a structure to absorb cigarette smoke. Today, Dr Iimura uses Mac, creative pro apps and Apple developer tools to inspire his students to tackle some of society’s biggest challenges. He uses Keynote to teach students how to identify problems, build pitches and raise funding — mimicking a real-life startup. Then, they use Apple technology to build solutions such as an augmented reality app on iPad for emergency readiness, books in Pages for sports safety, and new technologies on Apple platforms for education — shaping incredible solutions to improve lives.
iPad Pro. Dr Iimura and his students use iPad, Apple Pencil and Adobe Illustrator to sketch out and storyboard ideas for an accessibility app that helps teachers communicate with non‑verbal students.

Growing up in rural Thailand, Dr Srikulwong learned early on how to create opportunities for herself to succeed. She worked multiple jobs while studying for her computer science degree — without even having access to a computer. Now, as a professor, she is mentoring Thailand’s budding entrepreneurs. Dr Srikulwong uses iPad Pro to teach computational thinking and help her students solve real problems in the community. After students conduct their own research with iPad, Dr Srikulwong shows them how to use Swift Playgrounds to design apps that solve the local challenges they’ve discovered. The app includes interactive coding puzzles and playgrounds that provide instant visual feedback, so students can see the outcomes of their ideas immediately and explore different paths to creating positive change.
